Olivia Smart and Tim Dieck Earn Surprise FC Barcelona: Olivia Smart and Tim Dieck have discovered an unexpected reward for blending football with figure skating — an invitation to one of the biggest football matches in the world.
The Spanish ice dancing duo have been invited to attend FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid at Camp Nou, where they will reportedly watch El Clásico from the prestigious presidential box.
Football Meets Figure Skating
Smart and Dieck became fan favorites during the 2025-26 figure skating season thanks to their football-inspired exhibition program. Representing Spain, the Olympic ice dancers combined skating with football-themed choreography, complete with dribbling, penalty kicks, and Spanish football kits.
The duo performed their unique routine during the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, entertaining crowds with a mix of skating elements and football-inspired theatrics.
Speaking about the idea, Dieck credited Smart for bringing football culture onto the ice.
“It was Olivia’s idea, bringing soccer to the skating world,” Dieck said.
Smart explained that both athletes have always loved football and wanted to connect the sport with skating in a creative way.
“Both of us love football so much and have grown up watching football, so being able to combine it on the ice was really fun,” Smart said.
Their exhibition routine featured music from classic European hits including “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba and “Beautiful Day” by U2.
FC Barcelona Invitation Surprises Duo
The football-themed performances quickly caught attention beyond the skating world. Their Spanish jerseys and football-inspired gala routines eventually reached FC Barcelona, leading to an invitation to attend El Clásico.
Smart admitted the pair were surprised by the opportunity.
“We’re like, ‘Hey, it paid off!’,” Smart joked about receiving the invitation.
Although the duo may not be tested on their football abilities at Camp Nou, they are thrilled to see the connection between the two sports resonate with fans.
Olivia Smart’s Football Inspiration
Smart, originally from Sheffield, England, has long been a supporter of Sheffield United F.C.. She revealed that the idea for the football-inspired program came while looking at the European-heavy figure skating calendar.
The return of the 2026 ISU European Championships to Sheffield also inspired her desire to wear football shirts connected to each host country during performances.
However, due to competition-related restrictions, Smart and Dieck mainly performed in Spanish kits throughout the season.
Which Team Will They Support at the 2026 FIFA World Cup?
Despite their different backgrounds — Smart being British and Dieck German — the pair agree completely on one thing when it comes to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Both will support Spain.
“It’s going to be Spain because I love the country,” Dieck said.
Smart admitted she was divided during the 2025 UEFA Women’s Euro final between England and Spain, but says her allegiance is now firmly with Spain.
Building a Spanish Identity Together
Smart first represented Spain alongside former skating partner Adrián Díaz before teaming up with Dieck after the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
At first, some Spanish fans questioned the partnership because both skaters were born outside Spain. Over time, however, the duo developed a strong bond and embraced Spanish culture together.
Smart believes their shared sense of humor now reflects their adopted home.
“Spanish people and the Spanish culture is very laid back,” Smart explained. “That’s something we’ve developed as a team as well.”
